Wiping soot with a regular cloth almost always smears fine particulate deeper into the surface — our Waterford, VA technicians use a dabbing technique with chemical sponges specifically to avoid that.

Our technique avoids the streaking that comes from wiping soot with a rag.
Porous surfaces like drywall get different treatment than tile, glass, or metal.
Soot turns corrosive on metal within about 48 hours — we move quickly.
HEPA vacuums capture fine particulate instead of recirculating it into the air.
The primary tool for lifting soot from porous surfaces like drywall and painted trim without smearing.
This step happens before any wet cleaning, since vacuuming first prevents particulate from smearing when surfaces get wet.
Non-porous surfaces respond well to solvent cleaners that would stain something more absorbent.
We prioritize metal fixtures early in the job since the corrosion clock starts immediately.
Ceilings get cleaned before walls, since falling particulate would otherwise recontaminate freshly cleaned wall surfaces.
Soot pulled into return vents circulates through the whole Waterford, VA property if left untreated.

Crews arrive with HEPA vacuums and dry-chemical sponges on board.
You approve the scope before any sponge or solvent touches a surface.
Nothing closes out until you've inspected the finished work.
"Our own cleanup attempt made the soot streaks worse — the dabbing technique they used actually worked." — Homeowner, Waterford
"They caught the soot on our kitchen faucet before it started pitting, which the adjuster said saved us a hardware replacement claim." — Homeowner, Waterford, VA
"I didn't expect the vacuum step to matter that much, but the carpets ended up much cleaner than our own attempt." — Homeowner, Waterford
Regular cloths tend to spread soot rather than remove it.
Ideally within 48 hours, since acidic soot residue starts pitting metal fixtures after that.
Surface type determines whether we use dry sponges or solvent-based cleaners.
Cleaning the particulate and neutralizing the odor are related but separate steps.
Carpets and upholstery get vacuumed first to avoid smearing particulate when they're cleaned.
Same-day response is standard given how time-sensitive soot damage is.
We keep response times short across Waterford specifically because soot corrosion is a time-sensitive problem.
